Toyota Hilux BEV — The World’s First Electric Hilux

The Toyota Hilux BEV is a landmark vehicle — the first-ever fully electric version of the iconic Hilux pickup truck. Priced at RM226,300 OTR, it arrives as a CBU from Thailand and brings the Hilux nameplate into the EV era.

Hilux BEV Specs and Performance

Under the body-on-frame chassis, the Hilux BEV packs a 59.2 kWh NMC battery powering dual electric motors — one on each axle — delivering permanent AWD. Combined output is 144 kW (196 PS). The front motor produces 205 Nm and the rear motor delivers 268.6 Nm of torque, which should make for confident off-road and towing performance.

The trade-off? Range. At ~257 km WLTP, this is the shortest-range Toyota EV in Malaysia. That is expected for a body-on-frame pickup truck, but it does mean the Hilux BEV is best suited for daily work duties and weekend adventures rather than long-distance highway cruising.

  • Dual-motor AWD with Multi-Terrain Select (Rock, Mogul, Mud, Sand, Dirt)
  • Payload: 750 kg
  • Towing capacity: 2,000 kg (per Toyota Malaysia official specs)
  • Water fording depth: 700 mm
  • Ground clearance: 212 mm
  • DC fast charging: Up to 150 kW (10–80% in ~30 minutes)
  • AC charging: Up to 10 kW (10–100% in ~6.5 hours)

Hilux BEV Features and Safety

Inside, the Hilux BEV gets twin 12.3-inch displays (digital cluster + infotainment), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Qi wireless charger, and SofTex faux leather seats. The 8-way powered driver seat with lumbar support makes long drives comfortable.

Safety is covered by Toyota Safety Sense 3rd generation with 7 SRS airbags (including driver knee), adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane centring assist (Level 2), autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera with Multi-Terrain Monitor.

Toyota also includes connected services via the Toyota Remote app — battery monitoring, remote lock/unlock, climate pre-conditioning, geofencing, and SOS emergency call.

Who Should Buy the Hilux BEV?

The Hilux BEV is for buyers who need a pickup truck and want to go electric — tradies, small business owners, or lifestyle buyers who want AWD capability and do not drive more than 200 km per day. If range anxiety is a concern, this may not be your best bet yet. But for daily commercial use with overnight charging, it is a genuine game-changer.

Toyota bZ4X 2026 Facelift — The Range King

The facelifted Toyota bZ4X returns to Malaysia with significant upgrades and a price tag of RM220,000 OTR. This CBU from Japan now packs a larger 73.1 kWh NMC battery delivering an impressive 525 km WLTP range — up 89 km from the pre-facelift model.

bZ4X 2026 Specs and Performance

The bZ4X facelift comes in FWD configuration only for Malaysia, with a single front motor producing 167 kW (227 PS) and 269 Nm of torque — a bump of 23 PS over the outgoing model. That is comfortably the most powerful Toyota EV in Malaysia right now.

  • Battery: 73.1 kWh (NMC) — largest in the Toyota EV Malaysia lineup
  • Range: 525 km WLTP — best range of all three
  • DC fast charging: Up to 150 kW (10–80% in ~28 minutes)
  • AC charging: Up to 22 kW (0–80% in ~2.2 hours)

The 22 kW AC charging capability is a standout — if your home or workplace has a three-phase supply and a compatible wallbox, you can top up significantly faster than most competitors.

bZ4X Facelift — What Changed?

Toyota did not just bump the battery. The facelift brings:

  • New 14-inch touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Physical temperature knobs retained alongside touch controls
  • 64-colour ambient lighting and twin 15W Qi wireless chargers
  • Acoustic front glass for a quieter cabin
  • Revised suspension for improved ride comfort
  • 8 airbags (including centre airbag) with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
  • Panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats with memory, electric tailgate
  • Front and rear dash cams included

Who Should Buy the bZ4X?

The bZ4X is Toyota’s best all-rounder EV for Malaysian families. With 525 km of range, you can comfortably drive from KL to Penang on a single charge. The spacious interior (452-litre boot), premium features, and strong safety suite make it ideal for families upgrading from a Toyota Camry or RAV4. At RM220,000, it is priced close to the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD (RM216,450) — but offers distinct advantages: 22 kW AC home charging (vs Tesla’s 11 kW), Toyota’s extensive Malaysian dealer network, and the reassurance of an established after-sales ecosystem.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV — The Affordable Entry Point

The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is the most affordable Toyota EV in Malaysia at RM198,000 OTR. Built on a platform shared with the Suzuki eVitara (CBU from India), it slots in as a compact SUV with a BYD-supplied 61.1 kWh LFP battery delivering 426 km WLTP range.

Urban Cruiser EV Specs and Performance

The Urban Cruiser runs a single front motor producing 128 kW (174 PS) and 193 Nm, with a 0–100 km/h time of 8.7 seconds. It is the least powerful of the three Toyota EVs but perfectly adequate for city and highway driving.

  • Battery: 61.1 kWh (LFP — more durable, slower degradation)
  • Range: 426 km WLTP
  • Top speed: 150 km/h
  • DC fast charging: Up to 67 kW (15–80% in ~50 minutes)
  • AC charging: Up to 7 kW (15–100% in ~9.5 hours)
  • Boot space: 238 litres (306–562 litres with rear seats folded)

The DC charging speed of 67 kW is notably slower than the bZ4X and Hilux BEV. Plan your long-distance trips accordingly — a 15–80% charge will take about 50 minutes at a DC fast charger.

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 9-speaker JBL audio system
  • 360-degree surround view camera with bird’s eye and 3D views
  • Front and rear DVR (dash cam)
  • Panoramic sunroof

Who Should Buy the Urban Cruiser EV?

The Urban Cruiser EV is the gateway Toyota EV — ideal for urban commuters and small families who want a reliable, affordable electric SUV. The LFP battery chemistry means less worry about long-term degradation, and 426 km of range is more than enough for daily driving in the Klang Valley. At RM198,000, it competes directly with the Chery Omoda E5 (RM146,818) and sits above the BYD Atto 3 (RM123,800) — making Toyota the priciest option in this segment, though it brings brand trust and dealer network advantages.

Which Toyota EV Is Right for You? Decision Matrix

Still unsure? Here is a quick decision guide:

If you need… Get the… Why?
A pickup truck / AWD / off-road Hilux BEV (RM226,300) Only electric pickup in Malaysia, dual-motor AWD, Multi-Terrain Select
Maximum range / family SUV bZ4X (RM220,000) 525 km range, biggest battery, most powerful, premium cabin
Most affordable / city driving Urban Cruiser EV (RM198,000) Lowest price, 426 km range, LFP battery durability
Fastest DC charging Hilux BEV or bZ4X Both support 150 kW DC
Best AC home charging bZ4X 22 kW AC — fastest home charging of the three
Lowest running costs Urban Cruiser EV Cheapest to buy, LFP battery = less degradation

How Do Toyota EVs Compare to Competitors?

Toyota is not launching into a vacuum. Here is how the three models stack up against key competitors in Malaysia:

Model Price (RM) Range (WLTP) Battery Power
BYD Atto 3 123,800 420 km 60.5 kWh 150 kW
Chery Omoda E5 146,818 430 km 61.1 kWh 150 kW
Tesla Model Y (RWD) 195,450 466 km 60 kWh 220 kW
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV 198,000 426 km 61.1 kWh 128 kW
Toyota bZ4X 220,000 525 km 73.1 kWh 167 kW
Toyota Hilux BEV 226,300 257 km 59.2 kWh 144 kW

The BYD Atto 3 remains the value champion at just RM123,800 — nearly RM75,000 cheaper than the cheapest Toyota EV. However, Toyota’s brand trust, extensive dealer network, and 8-year battery warranty (extendable to 10 years for RM5,700) may justify the premium for many Malaysian buyers.

EV Incentives and Ownership Costs in Malaysia (2026 Update)

Important: CBU EV tax exemptions have ended. As of 1 January 2026, fully imported (CBU) EVs — including all three Toyota models — no longer enjoy zero import duty or zero excise duty. These exemptions expired on 31 December 2025 and were not renewed in Budget 2026. The prices listed above for all three Toyota EVs already reflect the applicable duties.

Only locally assembled (CKD) EVs retain tax exemptions (import duty, excise duty, and sales tax) until 31 December 2027.

EV Road Tax 2026 — New Power-Based Structure

The zero road tax (cukai jalan) era for EVs also ended on 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, all EVs pay road tax based on motor power output (kW), not engine capacity. The new rates are approximately 85% cheaper than the equivalent ICE road tax formula. For these three Toyota EVs, expect annual road tax in the range of approximately RM80–RM280 — far lower than an equivalent petrol SUV or pickup.

What Incentives Remain?

  • Individual tax relief of up to RM2,500 for EV charging equipment (until YA 2027)
  • CKD EV tax exemptions until 31 December 2027 (does not apply to these Toyota models)

Running Cost Savings

Running an EV in Malaysia is still significantly cheaper than petrol. Charging at home costs roughly RM0.05–0.08 per km compared to RM0.15–0.20 per km for a petrol car. Over 5 years and 60,000 km, that is a savings of RM4,000–RM7,000 on fuel alone — before factoring in lower maintenance costs (no oil changes, fewer brake pad replacements) and the significantly lower road tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest Toyota EV in Malaysia?

The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is the most affordable at RM198,000 OTR. It offers 426 km WLTP range with a durable LFP battery and comes well-equipped with a JBL sound system, 360-degree camera, and panoramic sunroof.

How far can the Toyota Hilux BEV drive on a single charge?

The Toyota Hilux BEV has a WLTP range of approximately 257 km. This is lower than the other two Toyota EVs because it uses a body-on-frame pickup truck platform with dual-motor AWD, which consumes more energy. It is best suited for daily work use with overnight home charging.

Which Toyota EV has the longest range in Malaysia?

The Toyota bZ4X facelift leads with 525 km WLTP range — enough to drive from Kuala Lumpur to Penang on a single charge. This is an 89 km improvement over the pre-facelift model, thanks to a larger 73.1 kWh battery.

Can I charge a Toyota EV at home in Malaysia?

Yes. All three Toyota EVs support AC home charging. The bZ4X supports up to 22 kW AC (with a three-phase supply), the Hilux BEV up to 10 kW, and the Urban Cruiser EV up to 7 kW. A dedicated wallbox charger is recommended.

Is the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV the same as the Suzuki eVitara?

Yes, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is built on the same Heartect-e platform as the Suzuki eVitara and manufactured at the same Maruti Suzuki factory in Gujarat, India. They share the same BYD-supplied LFP battery and drivetrain, but differ in exterior styling and interior trim.

Do Toyota EVs in Malaysia still get zero road tax?

No. The zero road tax exemption for EVs ended on 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, all EVs pay a reduced road tax based on motor power output (kW). The new rates are approximately 85% cheaper than the equivalent ICE formula. For these Toyota EVs, expect annual road tax of roughly RM80–RM280.

What warranty do Toyota EVs in Malaysia come with?

All three Toyota EVs come with a 5-year vehicle warranty (unlimited mileage for the bZ4X and Urban Cruiser; 150,000 km cap for the Hilux BEV) and an 8-year unlimited-mileage battery warranty. The battery warranty can be extended to 10 years for an additional RM5,700.

How long does it take to DC fast charge a Toyota EV?

The Hilux BEV and bZ4X both support up to 150 kW DC and can charge from 10–80% in approximately 28–30 minutes. The Urban Cruiser EV maxes out at 67 kW DC and takes approximately 50 minutes for a 15–80% charge.

Verdict: Toyota’s EV Triplet Has Something for Everyone

Toyota’s triple-launch strategy in Malaysia is bold and well-timed. With the Urban Cruiser EV starting at RM198,000, the brand finally has an affordable EV entry point — though it faces stiff competition from the BYD Atto 3 at RM123,800 and the Chery Omoda E5 at RM146,818. The bZ4X facelift with its class-leading 525 km range is a serious family SUV contender. And the Hilux BEV — while niche — is a historic first that opens up electrification for commercial and lifestyle pickup buyers.

The biggest gaps? The Hilux BEV’s limited range and the Urban Cruiser’s slow DC charging. But for daily Malaysian driving — most of us cover under 100 km per day — all three work just fine with overnight home charging.

Note that all three Toyota EVs are CBU imports, meaning they no longer benefit from the import and excise duty exemptions that ended in December 2025. Factor in the new (but still affordable) EV road tax when calculating your ownership costs.
