Buying a home EV charger in Malaysia doesn’t have to be confusing. Whether you just drove home a new Proton eMas 7, BYD Seal, or any other EV, charging overnight at home is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade you can make.

But with options ranging from basic 7kW units to three-phase 22kW powerhouses — plus a maze of SIRIM certifications, condo restrictions, and TNB wiring requirements — most buyers freeze up before they even start. This guide cuts through all of that.


EV Charging Levels Explained: AC vs DC, Level 1 vs Level 2

Home charging sits firmly in the AC (alternating current) category — the same electricity that comes out of your wall. There are three broad levels of EV charging, and understanding them saves you from overspending or underpowering your setup.

  • Level 1 (3.3kW): Standard 13A household socket. Slow — adds roughly 20–25 km of range per hour. Only practical as a backup option, not a daily driver solution.
  • Level 2 (7kW–22kW AC): Dedicated wall charger. The sweet spot for home use. A 7kW unit can fully charge a 70kWh battery overnight. This is what most Malaysian homeowners install.

What Is a Type 2 Charger and Why Malaysia Uses It

Type 2 supports both single-phase (up to 7.4kW) and three-phase (up to 22kW) charging. The connector has a distinctive 7-pin design and includes a locking mechanism so it can’t be accidentally unplugged mid-session. It’s robust, weather-resistant, and built for daily use.

If you see a charger listed as “Mennekes” — that’s just the German name for Type 2. Same thing. Malaysia’s Energy Commission and SIRIM both recognise Type 2 as the standard for AC EV charging infrastructure.

7kW vs 11kW vs 22kW: Which Home Charger Should You Get?

7kW Single-Phase (Most Popular)

A 7kW charger runs on a standard single-phase supply — the same setup most Malaysian landed homes and condos already have. It adds approximately 35–40 km of range per hour of charging, meaning a full overnight charge (8 hours) delivers around 280–320 km of range. That covers 99% of daily driving needs in Malaysia.

Installation is simpler and cheaper, typically requiring a dedicated 32A circuit from your distribution board (DB). Cost of a 7kW unit installed ranges from RM 2,499 to RM 3,500 depending on brand and cabling distance.

11kW Three-Phase (Middle Ground)

An 11kW charger requires a three-phase supply — not universally available in older Malaysian properties. If your home or condo already has three-phase power (common in newer developments and bungalows), an 11kW unit gives you noticeably faster top-ups. It’s ideal if you drive high mileage daily or want more flexibility.

Check your TNB meter — a three-phase supply will have three separate live wires. If you’re unsure, your installer can verify this during a free site survey.

22kW Three-Phase (Power Users)

A 22kW home charger is the fastest AC option available in Malaysia. At full speed, it can charge a 60kWh battery in under three hours. However, your EV’s onboard charger must support 22kW AC — many EVs cap at 11kW or 7.4kW AC regardless of what your wall charger delivers.

Check your EV’s onboard AC charging limit before paying a premium for 22kW hardware. If your car only accepts 11kW AC, you’ll never use that extra capacity.
