Finding the best home EV charger in Malaysia isn’t as simple as picking the cheapest unit on Shopee. You need to match the charger’s power output to your car’s onboard charger, confirm your home’s electrical supply can handle it, and make sure the installation is SIRIM-compliant — or your insurance could be void.

AC vs DC: Understanding Charging Levels in Malaysia
The first thing to understand is that home charging in Malaysia is always AC (alternating current). DC fast chargers — the kind you see at Shell Recharge or ChargEV stations — are commercial-grade units that cost tens of thousands of ringgit and require a three-phase industrial power supply.
For home use, there are effectively two tiers: Level 1 (standard 13A wall socket, very slow) and Level 2 (dedicated AC wall box, 7kW–22kW, the practical choice for daily home charging). Almost every EV owner in Malaysia who charges at home uses a Level 2 wall box.
What Is a Type 2 Charger and Why Malaysia Uses It
Type 2 (also called IEC 62196 Type 2 or “Mennekes”) is the universal AC charging standard adopted in Malaysia. Every EV sold in Malaysia in 2026 — from the Proton eMas 5 to the BMW iX to the BYD Seal — accepts a Type 2 connector for AC charging.
This is excellent news for buyers: it means you buy one home charger and it works with virtually any EV you’ll ever own. No proprietary connector headaches (looking at you, old-school CHAdeMO).
Type 2 can carry single-phase power (up to 7.4kW) or three-phase power (up to 22kW), depending on your home’s supply and the charger hardware. We’ll break that down in the next section.

7kW vs 11kW vs 22kW: Which Home Charger Power Level Is Right for You?
For most Malaysians, a 7kW charger is the sweet spot. Here’s why the numbers matter:
- 7kW (single-phase): Works with standard single-phase TNB supply (most landed homes and some condos). Charges a typical 60–70kWh battery from near-empty overnight in 9–11 hours. Sufficient for 90% of Malaysian daily driving patterns.
- 11kW (three-phase): Requires a three-phase TNB supply. Charges the same battery in roughly 6–7 hours. A good middle ground if you have three-phase supply already installed.
- 22kW (three-phase): The fastest home AC option. Charges a 60kWh battery in around 3 hours. However, your car’s onboard AC charger must also support 22kW — many EVs cap at 11kW AC, making a 22kW wall box offer zero additional speed for those vehicles.
Key rule: Your charging speed is always limited by the slower of the two — the wall box output or the car’s onboard charger limit. Check your EV’s spec sheet before buying a 22kW unit.

Malaysia Regulations: SIRIM, TNB & Strata Title Rules
SIRIM certification is non-negotiable for any home EV charger in Malaysia. A SIRIM-approved charger ensures the unit meets local electrical safety standards — and critically, it protects your home insurance policy. An uncertified charger that causes a fire could invalidate your claim.
From the TNB side, a dedicated circuit breaker for your EV charger is mandatory. Most 7kW installations require a 32A MCB on a dedicated circuit, separate from your household ring main. Your installer should handle this as part of the job — if they don’t mention it, that’s a red flag.
