Proton eMas 5 Review Malaysia 2026: Worth It?

Proton eMas 5 Real-World Review: Range, Charging & Value for Malaysian Drivers

Published: August 31, 2026 | By EV Sifu | Category: EV Reviews

The Proton eMas 5 is arguably the most important EV Proton has ever launched — not because of its specs on paper, but because of what it represents: a national brand finally going electric in a segment Malaysians actually buy. After spending several weeks with the eMas 5 across KL city traffic, the PLUS highway, and weekend drives up to Genting, here is our complete, no-fluff Proton eMas 5 review Malaysia drivers have been waiting for.

Is it a genuine contender, or is Proton still playing catch-up? Let’s find out.

Driving Experience: City & Highway

The eMas 5 drives better than its price suggests — and that’s a genuine compliment, not a backhanded one. Proton and Geely have done real tuning work here, and it shows the moment you ease into traffic on the Federal Highway.

City Driving

In Kuala Lumpur stop-go traffic, the eMas 5 is composed and effortless. The throttle mapping in Eco mode is smooth — none of that artificial hesitation you sometimes get in rebadged EVs — and the one-pedal driving regen is strong enough to handle most city braking without touching the brake pedal.

NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels are genuinely impressive for this price bracket. Road noise is well-suppressed at slower speeds, and wind noise only becomes noticeable above 100 km/h — perfectly acceptable for the segment.

Highway & Spirited Driving

On the PLUS highway at cruising speed (110–120 km/h), the eMas 5 feels planted and confident. The 320 Nm of torque means overtaking is drama-free — a quick press of the right pedal and you’re past lorries before the driver even reacts.

Switching to Sport mode firms up the steering and sharpens throttle response noticeably. It won’t give you goosebumps, but it’s genuinely fun for an SUV in this segment — enough to put a smile on your face on a winding B-road like the old Karak Highway stretch.

The suspension tune is on the softer side, which is the right call for Malaysia’s variable road surfaces. It absorbs the kind of inconsistent tarmac you’ll find on older federal roads and housing estate jalan masuk without feeling floaty.

Real-World Range Test Results

The Long Range variant claims 570 km on the CLTC cycle — in Malaysia, expect significantly less. We tested the Long Range unit across multiple real-world scenarios to give you honest Proton eMas 5 range figures.
