The Proton eMas 7 is arguably the most important EV Malaysia has seen — a locally-badged, Geely-platform SUV that carries the weight of national pride on its shoulders. We drove it every single day for a week: KL morning rushes, PLUS highway blasts to Ipoh, and the inevitable trawl through Subang Jaya on a Friday evening.

This isn’t a press launch puff piece. This is the Proton eMas 7 review Malaysia buyers actually need — real numbers, real charging stops, real frustrations, and a real verdict on whether your ringgit is better spent here or on an import.

Driving Experience: KL to Ipoh in an eMas 7

The eMas 7 LR is an absolute weapon on the PLUS highway. Mash the accelerator from a 110 km/h cruise and the AWD system launches you forward with the kind of urgency that makes your passenger grab the armrest — in a good way.

The steering is set up for comfort over sport, which is the right call for a Malaysian family SUV. It’s light enough for tight U-turns at Midvalley, and weighted enough at highway speeds that you don’t feel nervous. Body roll is well-controlled for a vehicle of this size and height.

Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) is genuinely impressive. Wind and road noise are well-suppressed up to around 130 km/h — beyond that, a subtle wind rush starts to creep in from the A-pillars, which is typical at those speeds.

One thing that surprised us positively: the suspension tune handles Malaysian roads better than expected. Speed bumps at Taman-Taman residential areas were absorbed without that harsh secondary bounce you get in stiffer EVs. The eMas 7 genuinely rides like a premium SUV, not a budget conversion.

Regenerative braking has three levels plus a one-pedal mode. We settled on Level 2 for most city driving — strong enough to recover meaningful energy but not so aggressive that it makes passengers uncomfortable. One-pedal driving works well in stop-and-go, though it takes about two days to feel natural if you’re coming from a petrol car.
