Proton eMas 5 Review Malaysia 2026: Worth It?

Proton eMas 5 Real-World Review: Range, Charging & Value for Malaysian Drivers

The Proton eMas 5 is Malaysia’s most anticipated homegrown EV — a Geely-platformed SUV wearing a Proton badge and promising premium features at a more accessible price point. But does it actually deliver where it counts for Malaysian drivers: real-world range on the PLUS Highway, fast-charging reliability, and genuine value against the likes of BYD and Chery? We drove it across KL, Selangor, and up to Ipoh to find out.

Proton eMas 5 Full Specifications

The eMas 5 is offered in Malaysia in two main variants — the Standard Range and Extended Range — built on Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform. Here’s a full breakdown of what you’re getting under the hood and beyond.

Driving Experience: KL Traffic to Highway Cruising

The Proton eMas 5 is a genuinely pleasant car to drive — arguably the most refined EV Proton has ever put on Malaysian roads. Power delivery from the single 200 kW front motor is smooth and linear, with none of the artificial jerkiness you sometimes feel in cheaper EVs.

In Kuala Lumpur traffic — think Federal Highway at 6pm — the eMas 5 is in its element. One-pedal driving is well-calibrated, and you can set three levels of regenerative braking via paddle shifters. The lightest setting barely does anything useful; we kept it on Level 2 for the best balance in stop-start conditions.

On the PLUS Highway between KL and Ipoh, the eMas 5 cruises confidently at 110 km/h with a composed, settled ride. Wind noise is impressively well-suppressed for this segment, and the chassis feels planted without being stiff on the uneven stretches around Rawang.

Steering is light — perhaps too light for enthusiast drivers — but suits the everyday Malaysian commuter well. Sport mode sharpens throttle response noticeably, though it doesn’t change the steering weight. For most Malaysians driving to the office, pasar malam, or heading balik kampung, the standard Eco or Normal modes will serve just fine.

Real-World Range: What Malaysian Drivers Actually Get

Proton claims up to 550 km (NEDC) for the Extended Range variant — but real-world numbers in Malaysia’s heat, traffic, and highway conditions tell a more honest story. Based on our week-long test, here’s what the eMas 5 actually delivers.
