Proton eMas 5 Real-World Review: Range, Charging & Ownership Costs in Malaysia
Published: July 13, 2026 | By EV Sifu Editorial Team
The Proton eMas 5 has become one of the most-searched EVs in Malaysia — and for good reason. At a starting price of RM59,800, it sits at a sweet spot that no other locally-backed EV has hit before, and Proton’s 41% market share of Malaysia’s mid-2026 EV market tells you buyers are responding.
But is the eMas 5 actually worth your ringgit, or is the low sticker price hiding compromises you’ll feel every day? We drove it hard — highway, city traffic, and a Kuala Lumpur to Penang run — to find out. Here is our complete Proton eMas 5 review Malaysia 2026.

Driving Experience: How Does the eMas 5 Feel on Malaysian Roads?
The short answer: better than you’d expect for under RM70,000. The eMas 5 delivers 320 Nm of torque from a standstill, which makes merging onto the Lebuhraya and overtaking slow-moving lorries on the PLUS highway feel effortless.
City Driving — Petaling Jaya to KL Sentral
In the city, the eMas 5 is genuinely pleasant. The three regenerative braking levels (selectable via paddle shifters) let you dial in your preferred driving feel — we kept it on Level 2 for most city driving, which allows meaningful one-pedal-driving in slow traffic.
Ride quality over Malaysia’s infamous jalan berlubang (potholed roads) is well-damped for its class. The suspension tuning leans slightly on the firmer side, but it’s nowhere near uncomfortable — you’d notice it more on a long drive than during the school run.
Highway Driving — KL to Penang
At highway cruising speeds of 110–120 km/h, the eMas 5 is composed and quiet. Wind noise is minimal, and the adaptive cruise control (ACC) with lane-keeping handled most of the North-South Expressway work confidently.
One area where the eMas 5 shows its price: the lane centring on the ADAS system can feel slightly nervous around sweeping curves, and it does require more manual steering corrections than premium EVs at twice the price. It’s fine — just don’t expect Tesla-grade Autopilot.

Cabin & Infotainment
The 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen is one of the standout features at this price. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the OTA update system means Prot
